Dhiyaatina dubartootaa toora falmii Oromummaan fiilmiiwwan <i>The Fallen Beats</i> fi <i>Eelaa</i> keessatti: Xiinxala xiinseeneffama dubartummaa

English Abstract The lack of a womanist critique of Oromoo films, which have emerged through intense struggle and gained significant attention, serves as the starting point for this research. The objective of this research is to analyse the representation of women in the struggle for Oromummaa in “The Fallen Beats” and “Eelaa” films. To achieve this objective, a qualitative research approach with a descriptive qualitative design was employed. Data were collected from primary sources (the films themselves) and from secondary sources (including related research, scholarly articles, and short recorded speeches) through document analysis. The film excerpts were selected using purposive sampling and analyzed through textual and contextual content analysis, followed by interpretation and evaluation. Accordingly, the films and the film data excerpts were selected in a manner that met the research objectives. The analysis employed African Womanist Narratology as the theoretical framework. The analysis showed that “The Fallen Beats”, through its narrative content, challenged the ingrained traditions that promote male dominance and proclaim the subordination of women, thereby advancing a womanist perspective. It foregrounds cultural consciousness as its central theme and, through its visual and narrative representation, exposes previously silenced experiences of Oromoo women's advocacy. In “Eelaa”, the female characters were portrayed as being socially antagonistic. The representation given to women diminished the mission of empowering women and fulfilling the role of saving the nation. This portrayal removed them from the position of being national advocates and pioneers of the womanist movement. Based on the findings of this study, the womanist discourse via Oromummaa, found in Oromoo film should be a focus of scholarly critical attention. Keywords: Struggle, film, Oromo, womanist narratology
