English Abstract
This study focuses on describing and analyzing the ordering of derivational and inflectional suffixes in Afaan Oromoo verbs. Afaan Oromoo is characterized by a rich verbal morphology and a complex relationship between verbal form, affix order and grammatical meaning. However, many previous studies have focused on describing derivational and inflectional suffixes individually, rather than systematically analyzing the order of verbal suffixes in Afaan Oromoo. This gap motivated the current study. Accordingly, the aim of this research was to provide a comprehensive description and analysis of the ordering of derivational and inflectional suffixes in Afaan Oromoo verbs. The study employed a qualitative and descriptive research design. Data were collected from written corpora, introspection, and elicitation with purposively selected informants. The analysis was conducted within a Basic Linguistic Theory framework, based on a linear morphological approach. The results show that, in general, derivational suffixes in Afaan Oromoo verbs consistently precede inflectional suffixes and attach directly to the verb root. Derivational suffixes exhibit a fixed internal order of their own. Accordingly, in the derivation of intransitive verbs, the single causative suffix (-s- / -is-) occurs immediately after the verb root, followed by the middle (-at-) and passive (-am-) suffixes, yielding the order ROOT – CAUS1 – CAUS2 – MID – PASS. Likewise, in transitive verbs, it has been observed that the middle (-at- / -achch-), double causative (-siis- / -sis- / -iis-), and passive (-am-) suffixes follow different systematic orders, such as ROOT – MID – CAUS2 – MID2, ROOT – CAUS2 – MID – PASS, or ROOT – PASS – CAUS2 – MID. Furthermore, when the base is a noun or an adjective, the order of derivational suffixes is confirmed to be ROOT – STAT – CAUS – MID – PASS, ROOT – CAUS – MID – PASS, or ROOT – MID – CAUS – PASS. On the other hand, in verbal inflection, inflectional suffixes follow a distinct sequence: FOC/NEG – ROOT – PER/GN/PL – ASP. In general, it is understood that in the derivation and inflection of Afaan Oromoo verbs, the overall affixes order is FOC/NEG – ROOT – DERIVATIONAL suffixes – INFLECTIONAL suffixes. Finally, since the order of nominal and verbal affixes has not been thoroughly investigated in this study, it remains another research gap that should be addressed in future research.
