Abstract
This chapter surveys the major developments in the knowledge and study of the Septuagint in Western Europe between 1450 and 1850. It concentrates on the editing and presentation of the text and its critical interpretation, discussing the impact of the discovery of new manuscripts and versions based on the Septuagint. It considers the growth of critical scholarship and the importance of debates, such as that around biblical chronology, which most involved the witness of the Septuagint. It identifies three distinct periods in the development of the text and in Septuagint scholarship.
