With the world in the coat, p 34: The “Curiosities” from Joal. Only one actual journey took place on the African continent, a week-long excursion to the village of Joal, located about twenty miles from the three Swedes headquarters. It is most likely that it was during this trip to Joal that Sparrman collected the etographic objects he then brought home to Sweden. In his own list of the twenty-five “curiosities,” they are presented as originating from “Nigritien,” the one on Sparrman’s time common designation for West Africa’s Sudan area.
