In December 2017, a trial excavation was conducted in the northwest compound of the amphitheater at Bet Guvrin (Permit No. A-8150; map ref. 189960/612930; Fig. 1), in an area where a path was due to be paved to provide accessibility to the site. The excavation, undertaken on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and financed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, was directed by V. Lifshits, with the assistance of E. Aladjem (aerial photography, drafting and surveying), S. Ganor (metal detection), Y. Al-'Amor (administration), Y. Vassal (report), A. Peretz (preliminary inspections), T. Winter (glass), I. Lidsky-Reznikov (pottery drawing) and D.T. Ariel (numismatics), as well as Y. Abadi-Reiss and P. Betzer (consultation).
