This chapter features a pastiche of separate narratives about Atalanta from Diodorus Siculus, Aelian, and Ovid which have been combined to present her life in three snapshots representative of her most popular myths: the first focuses on her incredible childhood being raised in the woods by a bear and later by hunters; the second tells of her exploits as a hunter and her participation in the famous Calydonian boar hunt alongside such notable heroes as Theseus, Peleus, and Castor and Pollux; the final myth highlights her speed, which she uses to challenge any potential suitors to a footrace in which their victory means marriage, and loss means their death. The Latin text enables readers to review the first three declensions as well as the present active system of verbs.
