Bolesław Leśmian’s Piła in Translation into Czech, Ukrainian and Russian and the Problem of Focalization
View through CrossRef
The article analyzes Bolesław Leśmian’s Piła and its translations into Czech, Russian and Ukrainian,
focusing on its treatment of two leading themes in Leśmian’s writing: love and death. It also
discusses the infl uence of focalization on the translation process through references to Mieke Bal’s
conceptualization of this category, formulated in her book Narratology. The translators’ methods
of handling focalization differ. The effects of focalization are refl ected in the disturbance of the balance
in describing the main character in relation to love and death, but they also directly concern
her ontological status.
