Soviet Yiddish propaganda poster “Religion is the Enemy of Workers of All Nationalities,” 1929-1931
View through Europeana Collections
The poster depicts a caricature group of social and political enemies of the Soviet socialism, including a rabbi holding Torah scroll rolled on two cannons, a member of petite bourgeoisie, a capitalist, and, paradoxically, a Catholic bishop, rallying in front of a gigantic industrial plant. The poster promoted anti-religious campaigns launched by the atheistic state-sponsored organization - the Union of Militant Atheists (Soiuz voinstvuiushchikh bezbozhnikov) (1925-1947). The poster is dated by the slogan “5 in 4 [Accomplish the Five-year plan in 4 years]” which becomes popular after launching of the first Five-year plan in 1929. Designed by “A.H” (artist’s initials in Hebrew letters alef and hei in the bottom left corner). Published by Tsenroizdat (Central Publishing House for the USSR Peoples, 1924-1931) between 1929 and 1931 in Moscow. Print run 6,000 copies. Price 50 kopeks.
