Nationalism and Patriotism in Ghana’s History

The current study pays attention to the concepts or the notions of nationalism and patriotism in Ghana's history. In the first instance, it pays attention to the expanse definitions of the two concepts and what they mean to different scholars and how they apply to the current study and the Ghanaian context in particular. Based on documentary sources of literature and textual and thematic analysis, the author builds a historical argument on the changing faces of nationalism and patriotism within Ghana's history from the pre-colonial era to contemporary times. The study argues among other things that nationalism and patriotism have taken different forms over time and waned over time due to the complexities of bad governance and leadership and the changing interest of members or citizens of the Ghanaian state. The study further concludes that the attainment of independence on 6th March, 1957 marked a significant milestone in Ghana's history, solidifying its national identity and sovereignty. Yet, before and after this period, we saw variations of nationalism and patriotism, as well as the decline of same values or the misuse of them, which affected national unity and related development. Most of the related debates, based on lived experiences, point to severe challenges to nationalism and patriotism in the many decades of colonial resistance and afterward in modern state practice.
