STAKEHOLDERS’ KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTIONS OF BIOPHILIC URBANISM IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN LAFIA, NIGERIA

This study examines the knowledge and perceptions of biophilic urbanism among stakeholders involved in construction projects in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The research adopts a quantitative approach using a cross-sectional survey design, with data collected from 344 respondents, including architects, urban planners, construction companies, government officials, real estate developers, and residents. Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze the data, focusing on stakeholders’ awareness levels, perceived importance, benefits, and challenges associated with biophilic urbanism. The findings reveal that 52% of respondents are aware of biophilic urbanism, while 48% have limited or no knowledge of the concept. Awareness levels vary significantly across stakeholder groups, with professionals demonstrating higher levels of knowledge compared to residents. Despite this disparity, the study found a strong positive perception of biophilic urbanism, with 85% of respondents rating it as important or very important. Key perceived benefits include improved environmental sustainability (30%), enhanced aesthetic appeal (26%), increased property value (24%), better mental and physical health (20%), and reduced energy consumption (18%). However, the adoption of biophilic urbanism is hindered by several challenges, including limited knowledge (45%), high initial costs (40%), lack of policy support (35%), and cultural resistance (20%). These barriers highlight the need for targeted interventions to bridge the gap between awareness and implementation. The study concludes that while stakeholders recognize the importance of biophilic urbanism, its successful adoption depends on improved awareness, supportive policies, financial incentives, and stakeholder collaboration. The study recommends increased public education, policy reforms, and capacity-building initiatives to promote sustainable urban development in Lafia.
