THE ROLE OF BIOPHILIC CAMPUS DESIGN IN ENHANCING UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENTS IN SOUTHEAST NIGERIA
View through CrossRef
Biophilic design elements exist in university environments, yet they are often not recognised as intentional features that promote health, wellness, and environmental sustainability. Universities worldwide have historically contributed to the cultural and socioeconomic development of their surrounding communities, and biophilic campus design offers an opportunity to further enhance their value. Despite the global recognition of biophilic campus design, its adoption in Southeast Nigeria remains limited. Given the region’s tropical climate, rapid expansion of university infrastructure, and increasing student population, integrating biophilic elements is essential for improving thermal comfort, student engagement, and long-term campus sustainability. This study examines the role of a biophilic integrated design scheme in university campus environments in Southeast Nigeria, exploring its impact on outdoor spaces and proposing recommendations for effective implementation. The study employs secondary data from literature on biophilic design, environmental psychology, and university landscaping. Findings from these multidisciplinary sources establish connections between biophilic design, student well-being, and campus sustainability. Findings reveal that biophilic campus design enhances student retention, cognitive function, stress reduction, and microclimate regulation. However, in Southeast Nigeria, universities often prioritise infrastructure over landscape development, resulting in hardscape campuses with limited green spaces. Key challenges include funding constraints, weak policies, and infrastructural barriers. Biophilic campus design fosters restorative environments, improving academic performance, mental well-being, and social interaction. Green corridors, shaded walkways, and open-air study spaces can enhance student experiences while promoting sustainability. This study contextualises biophilic design within Southeast Nigeria, and proffers long-term solutions to improve campus landscaping and thermal comfort while learning.

Title: THE ROLE OF BIOPHILIC CAMPUS DESIGN IN ENHANCING UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENTS IN SOUTHEAST NIGERIA
