Biophilic Design Principles in Contemporary Interiors

The growing disconnection between humans and natural environments has become a pressing concern in contemporary urban life, particularly within interior spaces where individuals spend the majority of their daily time. Rapid urbanization, technological dependence, and the dominance of artificial environments have contributed to increased stress levels, reduced psychological comfort, and declining environmental awareness. In this context, biophilic design has emerged as a strategic and human-centered approach that seeks to reintegrate natural elements, forms, and processes into interior environments. This article examines the application of biophilic design principles in contemporary interiors through a comparative analysis of conventional and biophilic design approaches. The study focuses on key interior typologies, including residential, workplace, and institutional spaces, and evaluates their performance in terms of psychological well-being, spatial quality, sustainability, and overall user experience. By drawing on established theoretical frameworks from environmental psychology and interior architecture, the research highlights how biophilic strategies enhance multisensory engagement, emotional comfort, and human-nature connectivity. Selected international case examples are analyzed to demonstrate the practical implementation of biophilic principles and their impact on interior environments. The findings reveal that biophilic interiors not only improve user satisfaction and mental well-being but also contribute to environmentally responsive and sustainable design solutions. Ultimately, the study argues that biophilic design should be understood as a fundamental framework for contemporary interior architecture, offering long-term human and environmental benefits rather than serving as a purely aesthetic or temporary design trend.
