A Social Epistemology of Assertion

View through CrossRef
Abstract There is little to no doubt that assertion, as the central vehicle for sharing knowledge, plays a key role in social epistemology. This chapter motivates a shift towards a more social epistemology of assertion, in line with the general methodological shift in social epistemology at large. It defends an account of the normativity of assertion against this backdrop: it argues that assertion has the epistemic function of generating knowledge in hearers and uses this result to develop a distinctively social account of the normativity of assertion. Finally, the chapter outlines some implications of the presented view for the epistemology of testimony.
