The opposition has gathered to plot against the fatherland: they are taken by surprise by the state night watchmen. The latter are Pitt and Dundas. In fear Tooke, Nichols and Tierney crawl under the table; the Duke of Bedford (as the note hanging out of his pocket shows) climbs up the chimney and the Duke of Norfolk wants to follow him; on the ladder Fox at the top, Sheridan below him, want to climb out of the window. The Earl Moira, in his Guard uniform, stands transfixed. At his feet lie: the infamous Dublin newspaper, the press which H. O'Connor published and which was the clamouring trombone of the Irish opposition, but has now ceased. There are Münchhausen's Aufschneidereyen, which points to the speech of Count Moira in the English House of Lords about the atrocities of the outcast troops, which are here, in the sense of aristocatism, declared to be fictitious. On the table the negotiations of the Londner Corresponding Society, a plan of England's invasion, below one sees assignations and proposals/ to the [?] allied Irish. The portraits are all similar for speaking. The rats refer, I know not quite by what medium, to the Secession or staying away of the Opposition from Parliament. One sees Freyheitsmützen and Buonaparte's and Robespierre's effigies above. NB. The scene is in Grubstreet; as one sees from the window on the ceiling!
