L’adaptation du Pastor Fido de Fanshawe par Elkannah Settle (1676)

L’article propose une lecture serrée de deux textes placés en regard l’un de l’autre, la version du Pastor Fido de Richard Fanshawe (1647), elle-même inspirée de l’œuvre de Guarini, et celle d’Elkannah Settle (1676). La pièce fut jouée en décembre 1676 au « Duke’s Theater » et publiée en 1677. Si l’on en juge par la très courte période durant laquelle elle demeura à l’affiche, elle fut un échec. Voir John Harbage, Annals. L’objectif de la démarche est de cerner quelques unes des différences et des similitudes structurelles, langagières ou esthétiques principales entre les deux textes afin d’émettre quelques hypothèses sur ce que peut révéler, dans l’esthétique de la Restauration, les modulations observées.
