Melville et Dante. Vittorio Gassman : Ulisse e la balena bianca

Après un très bref rappel de l’expérience américaine de Vittorio Gassman en tant qu’acteur de cinéma, cet article centre son propos sur l’acteur et auteur de théâtre, et plus particulièrement sur la pièce que Gassman écrivit et mit en scène à Gênes en 1992 à l’occasion des célébrations colombiennes, Ulisse e la Balena bianca. Une pièce qui est en fait une adaptation théâtrale du Moby Dick de Melville effectuée à partir de la traduction de Cesare Pavese, et qui se clôt sur le célèbre monologue de l’Ulysse de Dante dont le capitaine Achab se révèle être une réincarnation. La version de Pavese et les préfaces qui l’ont acompagnée ne sont pas étrangères à cette double lecture, le jeune traducteur ayant parfois un peu forcé le texte.
