Chapter 4. Marine Biology: Pringsheim’s Legacy on Helgoland. This chapter reconstructs the institutional history of marine biology on Helgoland and analyzes Nathanael Pringsheim’s role in the founding of the Biological Institute Helgoland in 1892. It situates the island within nineteenth-century German science, tourism, nationalism, and imperial politics, emphasizing its distinctive marine habitats, tidal conditions, and importance for zoological and botanical research. The chapter traces earlier scientific activity on Helgoland, including work by Christian-Gottfried Ehrenberg, Rudolf Wagner, Johannes Müller, Karl August Möbius, Ernst Haeckel, and Pringsheim himself, and places German efforts in relation to the broader European network of marine biological stations, especially Anton Dohrn’s Naples station. It examines the political opportunity created by the 1890 transfer of Helgoland from Britain to the German Empire and shows how Pringsheim, supported by Gustav von Gossler and Friedrich Althoff, mediated competing institutional, disciplinary, and regional interests. The chapter also follows the later development of the institute, its destruction and postwar reconstruction, and its incorporation into the Alfred Wegener Institute. Additional sections examine the North Sea Museum, the public aquarium, the botanical experimental garden, and later memorial initiatives as extensions of Pringsheim’s scientific and institutional legacy.
