Preface by the author

The preface explains why the bicentennial of Nathanael Pringsheim’s birth in 2023 prompted this book and positions the botanist as a modernizer of nineteenth-century botany. The study of plant development replaced a narrow focus on collecting and cataloging plants, while advances in microscopy brought algae and mosses within reach at the cellular level. The preface gives particular prominence to Pringsheim’s 1855 observation, which it describes as the first direct observation of fertilization in a living organism: male gametes swam purposefully toward female “egg cells” and united with them. This demonstrated sexuality in algae previously regarded as sexless and led to its interpretation as a universal principle of life. The text also outlines Pringsheim’s scientific career, family, and institution-building work in Berlin, Jena, and Helgoland, including one of the world’s first plant physiology institutes and Germany’s first marine research station. It concludes by explaining the book’s structure and terminology, identifying the author’s family connection to the Pringsheim-Ladenburg family as a personal motivation, and acknowledging the extensive archival, editorial, graphic, and institutional support behind the project.
