Chapter 5. Aesthetics: Art Forms of Microscopy.

Chapter 5. Aesthetics: Art Forms of Microscopy. This chapter examines scientific drawing and color lithography as epistemic practices in nineteenth-century microscopy, using Nathanael Pringsheim’s botanical illustrations as its central case. It situates Pringsheim’s visual work within the longer tradition of natural history illustration while emphasizing the new demands created by improved microscopy after 1800: the representation of cellular structures, developmental sequences, and fine morphological detail in reproducible visual form. The chapter argues that drawing was not merely a means of documentation but a method of observation, selection, normalization, and interpretation, enabling researchers to analyze plant development and communicate results before the widespread use of photographic and digital imaging. It also discusses lithography, introduced by Alois Senefelder, as a technical medium that made colored scientific reproduction possible and connects Pringsheim’s images to broader visual cultures of biology, including Ernst Haeckel’s later Art Forms of Nature. The selected figure captions present Pringsheim’s illustrations of algae, mosses, ferns, and flowering plants as visual evidence for his studies of fertilization, sexual reproduction, alternation of generations, and plant development.
