Bust of Colonel Josef Jiří Švec

Josef Jiří Švec (1883-1918) - Sokol functionary, gym teacher, legionnaire, colonel of legions in Russia. In 1911 he was sent by the Třebíč Sokol as a gym teacher to Russia. After the outbreak of the war, he volunteered for the Czech Cooperative in Kiev, after the battle of Zborov he was appointed lieutenant and as commander of 3. the battalion participated in the battle of Kazan, Penza, Lipjaga and the conquest of Samara. In 1918 he was promoted to colonel and became commander of 1. divisions. After giving him On October 24, 1918, under the influence of communist agitation, his subordinates denounced obedience and refused to fulfill the order to push the bolsheviks' power out of the Buzuluk - Bulugma line, he committed at three o’clock in the morning On October 25, 1918, suicide (shot himself in a staff wagon) when he left a farewell letter. The death of Colonel Švec shook Czechoslovak soldiers, and they finally fulfilled the order.
