Contributions to the knowledge of the fineware discovered in Romula

View through CrossRef
In this article we present a synthesis of the fine ceramics discovered in the central area of the Roman city, during archaeological research between 2013 and 2017. In this sector of the Roman city, the most numerous and varied vessels and types of vessels attributed to fine ceramics, according to the typology of Roman ceramics, were discovered. Within the framework of fine ceramics, terra sigillata vessels (western and eastern) were first included, then barbotine vessels and thin-walled vessels. Terra sigillata represented a category of luxury ceramic vessels, which was initially produced in the western Roman provinces, such as Italy, Gaul and Germania, and later also in Pannonia, Moesia and Dacia. There are also a series of fragments of vessels of this type that were produced in the provinces of the Lower Danube, including Romula. Fragments of oriental terra sigillata vessels have also been discovered. The fragments of thin-walled vessels are present in a slightly higher proportion than those of the terra sigillata category. The fragments of vessels decorated with barbotine are rarer, indicating that they could also have been local products.
