Imām ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Bādīs’ Stance towards Sufism

Objective: This article aims to clarify Imām ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Bādīs’ stance towards Sufism. Researchers have varied opinions on classifying him as a Sufi or someone opposed to Sufism. Therefore, this article examines his upbringing, his interaction with the issues of his time, and his stance towards Sufism. Methodology: This study utilises a historical method to trace Ibn Bādīs’ opinions and stances within their historical contexts, an inductive method to infer his ideas through texts, an analytical method to analyse the texts, and a descriptive method to present his views from his perspective. Results: Ibn Bādīs had a Sufi upbringing, contributing significantly to his balanced views of Sufi issues. He distinguished between what is authentic and acceptable in Islam and what is foreign, which serves to discredit any assertions of his wholesale opposition to Sufism. Ibn Badis had his own approach to Sunni Sufism, as evident in his writings. Originality: The scientific value of this research lies in its revelation of the spiritual and Sufi dimensions of ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Bādīs’ thought, opening the door for further studies on Sufism from his perspective.
