Manfred Dierks und Werner Frizen haben einst Schopenhauers Präsenz in Thomas Manns Werk herausgearbeitet. Hans Wysling entwarf Manns Schaffen als die imaginäre Befriedigung von Allmachts- und Alleinheits-Sehnsüchten, die einer Entwicklungsstörung im Bereich des primären Narzißmus (nach Freud und Kohut) geschuldet seien; Schopenhauers Metaphysik habe dem Autor den dazu beglückend passenden Weltentwurf bereitgestellt. Thomas Klugkist will nun am Roman Doktor Faustus vorführen, daß sich aus diesem Doppelansatz Thomas Manns Schaffen bis in sein allerletztes Detail ableiten lasse.
