Abstract
The Introduction presents the working hypothesis of the study: Epicurus’ epitomai and maxims not only indicate a way of understanding and living but also instantiate the pursuit of happiness as a practical endeavour carried out by its practitioners, namely human beings. It contends that, from such a pragmatic perspective, the content must also be somehow reflected in the form and stylistic features of Epicurus’ writings. After situating the book within current debates on ancient philosophy as practice and in Epicurean studies, the Introduction states that the texts preserved by Diogenes Laertius (Letter to Menoeceus, Letter to Herodotus, Letter to Pythocles, and Key Doctrines) are particularly good candidates to analyse the application of the doctrine, not only because they are reductions (epitomai) aimed at enhancing memorability, quick use, and transmission but also because of their epistolographic features. Such a focus on efficacy and the performative function of Epicurus’ texts calls for a holistic approach in terms of methodology, bridging what is expressed and the way it is expressed. In particular, person deixis is introduced as a highly productive analytical category to address how Epicurus’ philosophy is tailored to, and interacts with, the recipients of his teaching. The combination of analysing philosophical content and linguistic features is thus presented as the methodological backbone of the work, which is mirrored in the very structure. The Introduction closes with additional remarks on the editions used and the book’s occasional context-specific digressions, such as when addressing debates about authenticity.
