Boxing match/wedding procession
View through Europeana Collections
This blend vessel for wine and water - near 500 BC - is painted on both sides.
The main page shows a boxing match. Both athletes compete against each other only with hand-straps, as is customary in antiquity.
To the right and to the left side of the pair of fighters, a mantle boy and a naked man with a helmet follow the fighting.
The other side of the vessel shows a wedding procession. The couple is on a cart drawn by four horses. The woman is disguised, the man wearing chitone and coat. The bride holds a wreath in his left hand, the groom leads the reins. Behind the horses are a female and a male figure. The man holds a kithara in his hands. In front of the four-spell is another woman. (Archaeological Museum of the EMU Münster)
