Aristokles of Messene

View through CrossRef
Abstract Aristokles of Messene is a little‐known Peripatetic of imperial times (he is probably to be dated in the early first century ce ). In his work On Philosophy , preserved in fragments, Aristokles is critical of materialism, relativism, and skepticism, which is advocated mainly by the Eleatics, the Skeptics, the Epicureans, and the Cyrenaics, while he stresses the value of Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy. Aristocle's profile comes close to that of Antiochus of Ascalon, who also considered the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle in agreement and was also critical of skepticism.
