The Detectors based on PMTs
View through CrossRef
Abstract
As a vacuum photoelectric device, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) has a very wide range of applications in the field of weak optical signal detection. Compared with avalanche photodiodes, PMTs have single-photon detection sensitivity, higher gain, and faster response. PMTs can also be made into different sizes to cope with different application scenarios. This paper will start with the structure of PMTs, then introduce the application of PMTs with different sizes and shapes in different neutrino detection apparatus, the detection of dark matter and gamma rays by PMTs, and the application of PMTs in medical imaging and analytical instruments. Finally, prospects of future developments of PMTs will be discussed.
