Havana : Beyond the Façade

<p dir="ltr">This thesis delves into the identity of Cuban architecture in Havana's urban landscape, challenging the common perception of the city as frozen in time. It begins by exploring the significant mid-twentieth-century artistic architectural experimentation, followed by the prevalence of prefabricated construction in the post-revolution era. Amidst the 1990s economic crisis, tourism emerged as a financial solution, leading to construction and restoration in Havana. However, this growth also brought gentrification and social disparities, gradually eroding the city's unique character. To address these challenges, the thesis takes a comprehensive approach, investigating both the static and temporal dimensions of Havana. It proposes six design principles that consider the needs of both locals and tourists while preserving the city's rich cultural heritage. By implementing these principles, spaces in Havana can gradually reflect contemporary realities while paying homage to its vibrant past. </p>
