Spectacular Bid

This chapter follows Gatewood Galbraith's first gubernatorial campaign, from 1989 through the election in Fall 1991. It covers the extensive campaign and publicity surrounding Gatewood's foray onto the public scene. It introduces Gatewood's friendship with country singer Willie Nelson, and the benefit concert he played in support of Gatewood's campaign. It includes media coverage of his campaign and tour of Kentucky in his "hempmobile" Also included are Gatewood's family and financial difficulties, and the public criticism of his run and stance on prominent issues, most centrally his support for the legalization of marijuana. It concludes with Gatewood's loss in the gubernatorial primary election, and health issues that arose as a consequence of his exhausting campaign.
