Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803) was a key intellectual figure in the transition period between the German Enlightenment and Idealism. A personal pupil of Kant and Hamann, he moved on to become one of the most versatile and universal thinkers of his time. As an author, he was a central literary figure in Weimar in the so‐called “classic age” of German literature. Professionally, he worked in high church offices throughout his life.
