A New Model of Temporary Intraoperative Keratoprosthesis
View through CrossRef
Relevance. Pen globe injury (OGI) is one of the most severe types of ocular trauma in
both peacetime and wartime conditions. Considering the extent of damage to the anterior
and posterior segments of the eye and the need for simultaneous vitreoretinal surgery,
temporary keratoprosthesis is required in 47.1% of cases.
Objective. To develop a Russian analog of a temporary keratoprosthesis for combined
vitreoretinal and optic-reconstructive surgery.
Materials and Methods. The main technical requirements were formulated. A model of a
temporary intraoperative keratoprosthesis was developed.
Results and Discussion. The properties of K-8 optical glass suggest a high potential for
the intraoperative temporary keratoprosthesis made from this material.
Conclusion. The proposed temporary intraoperative keratoprosthesis enables vitreoretinal
and optic-reconstructive treatment of severe ocular trauma and serves as a viable alternative
to foreign analogs.
Keywords: Temporary keratoprosthesis, open globe injury, optic-reconstructive surgery.
