Liu Hai (literally “sea padda”) is the god of prosperity and is usually depicted tempting a three-legged toad with coins, to attract the ominous creature from the depths. Here the god jumps on a leg with a string of coins, half on his shoulder and half on the ground, while the toad jumps up after them. The coins bear Kangxi’s mark, which is a useful reference point for dating. Liu Hai and his toad are said to be depicted in the shadows of the moon, and a toad with a gold coin in his mouth was a common talisman to promote thriving business. Undecorated white Dehuaporcelain was sometimes considered too simple in Europe, where extra enamel paintings were added to give colour.
