Purchased by Johanna Kempe on 22 March 1890 at art dealer H Bukowski. for 51 Kr. 97 The strong and clear cobalt blue color of this pot with lid is typical of the very best porcelain from the Kangxi period. The decorum depicts a couple of fenghuang birds, sometimes called “Chinese Fenix” despite their symbolism different from the Western Fenix bird. In China, the male bird steers feng and the female huang over all other birds. They represent great virtue and pace, as well as the association between yin and yang. Around the neck of the pot there is a stretcher with bamboo. Beside the birds and on the lid, wutong trees are visible, the only tree on which Fenix birds settle. The Wutong tree is yin, while bamboo is yang. Below the birds, peonies grow out of stones. The flower symbolizes wealth, renown, love, tenderness and feminine beauty.
