Portrait of Albrecht Dürer d.Ä.
View through Europeana Collections
The first part “Der Nuremberg Münz-Belusungen” (cf. JH.Num.q.34 (1 of the Bamberg State Library) produced Leitner’s illustration of a medal that portrays Albrecht Dürer d.Ä. in the left profile. The depiction goes back to a primordial portrait, probably made by Hans Daucher in 1514 (cf. Mende 1983, pp. 253-255) and gained notoriety, not least by imitating the medal, which was provided with the monogram Dürer and disseminated. In 1849, a permanent specimen of the medal was transferred with the rest of Heller’s estate to the then Royal Library (now the Bamberg State Library). (Cf. Heller Dürer 1831 II.1089.3) This was also done with the printing plate edited by Leitner (see copper plate 9 of the State Library Bamberg). Heller included the work under the heading “Hnach Dürer’s Paintings and Drawings Produced Leaves” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.902,2492)
