Portrait of Albrecht Dürer d.Ä.

View through Europeana Collections
Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), as an illustration of his “Teutsche Academie” published in 1675, one specimen became the property of the then Royal Library in 1849 with the rest of Heller’s estate (now JH.Art.f.2 of the StaatsachBamberg), a portrait of Albrecht Dürer d.Ä. (1427-1502). The above described chest painting, which is on a record with five other artists' paintings (including I K 58 of the State Library Bamberg), is set in an oval and shows the goldsmith with a view firmly directed towards the viewer. The engraving of copper is based on a portrait painted by Dürer by his 70-year-old father, of which several imitations exist today. Heller included the engraving of copper under the heading “Hnach Dürer’s paintings and drawings made leaves” in his 1827 published Dürer publication. (Cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.901,2487)
