Portrait of Albrecht Dürer and three other portraits

As an illustration of the second volume of the 1764 edition of Carel van Manders, “Het leven der doorluchtige Nederlandsche en eenige hoogduitsche schilders,” Ladmiral made a view of four portraits, including a portrait of Albrecht Dürer. He shows the portraits in a narrow section, overlapping each other. Dürer’s portrait closes upwards. Heller included the etching under the heading “BildH” in his 1827 published Dürer publication (cf. Heller Dürer 1827 II.325.43). The pictorial form is based on a portrait, which was only handed down by graphic reproductions, which Tommaso di Vincidor was said to have painted in Antwerp in 1520 by his artist colleague Dürer (cf. Mende 1976, p. 134). The portrait informs about this in his diary of the Dutch journey. One of the two still preserved transcripts of the diary passed with the estate of Heller to the estate of the Royal Library (cf. JH.Msc.Art.1 #1 of the State Library Bamberg).
