The article probes into the link between story and history in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and endeavors to show how this fictitious autobiography, based on Miss Jane’s sometimes chaotic memory, opens a space of revision of American history. As it revisits the US past from the Civil War to the struggle for Civil Rights, the narrative departs from the traditional historiography by laying emphasis on the human dimension of history. Presenting a competitive history, it is first and foremost a popular document, which, through Miss Jane’s narrative, echoes the voices of unheard people whose stories have systematically been silenced.
