Self-portrait on the 6th wedding anniversary

View through Europeana Collections
The Self-portrait on the 6th Wedding Day, created in Paris, is an example of Paula Modersohn-Becker's modernity: simple form accompanied by reduced color. With paintings like this she manages the implementation of the "great simplicity of form" after which she sought all her life. Standing in front of a light green spotted background her upper body is naked except for an amber necklace. A white cloth is wrapped around her waist. The right arm is lying above the bulging belly, which is held by the left arm from below. As Paula Modersohn-Becker painted this picture, she was not pregnant. It is the first Self-portrait of a woman in the history of art.
