The Parallel Aesthetics of Nilda Peraza

View through CrossRef
Nilda Peraza was a pivotal figure in NYC’s alternative arts scene in the 1970s and 1980s. She directed Cayman Gallery, an informal training ground and exhibition space for emerging Puerto Rican, Nuyorican, Latino, and Latin American artists. Peraza then initiated Cayman’s evolution into the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art (MoCHA) in 1985, driven by her concept of “parallel aesthetics,” or an inclusive art aesthetic mediated by proximity to the mainstream. Following MoCHA’s abrupt closure in 1990, Peraza withdrew from the contemporary art world. Her subsequent work in Puerto Rico was left virtually undocumented. Nevertheless, Peraza’s vision fostered multiculturalism and created opportunities for underrepresented artists and arts professionals. Her legacy remains an essential chapter in the narrative of NYC’s diverse alternative art landscape.
