The Icon and Its Commentary

The Novgorod Sophia iconography has a coeval commentary from the fifteenth century which is the earliest surviving Russian icon commentary, followed by others. By analysing the Sophia commentary, the first, ‘Word’ part investigates this genre of late medieval Russian literature. It traces the genesis of these commentary texts, determines their specifics and function, and develops a methodology which assists in their decoding. The first chapter reveals the links of Russian icon commentaries with Christian allegorical exegesis and question-and-answer literature. It also identifies the biblical quotations in the text which suggest an ecclesiological meaning of both the commentary and the Sophia icon.
