Abstract
By way of conclusion, the Epilogue turns to a preliminary consideration of the enduring influence exerted by Vergil’s intergeneric maius opus on subsequent Roman poets. The chapter presents two case studies in miniature on the reception of Vergilian intergeneric poetics in Statius’ depictions of Elegy and Venus in the epithalamium for L. Arruntius Stella (Stat. Silu. 1.2.1–23) and in Ovid’s epitaphic commemorations of Phaethon (Met. 2.325–38) and Caieta (Met. 14.441–45). By drawing attention to striking and suggestive evidence from these pivotal passages, the Epilogue lends impetus to further contemplation of the profound impact of Vergilian intergeneric poetics on the subsequent literary tradition.
