Chinese Porcelain Tulip Vase

View through Europeana Collections
A bulbous, blue and white, porcelain vase. The bottom section is made up five vase shapes joined together. Each of the smaller vases has its own narrow neck with a fluted rim. In the centre of the piece there is a tall neck, culminating in a spherical shape at the top, also with a fluted rim. The vase is decorated with flowers, leaves and butterflies. The vase possibly dates from 17th century China. Although tulip vases were designed in the Netherlands in the 17th century, replicas were made in blue and white porcelain in China and imported by the Dutch East India Company.
