VASE. Kalebass-shaped, on a foot edge, the upper part pear-shaped and drawn in a narrow funnel-shaped neck. On the lower part decor with figures in a landscape. On the neck two groups tulip like flowers and long leaves. Underglaze painting in blue-white, with marks after blisters. The underside is partly unglazed and has residues after bedding. Purchased by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl, 3 November 1904, at Bukowski’s Konsthandel, Stockholm.
Although the Chongzhen period, the last prodigy of Mingdynasty, was a time of political and economic breakdown, a great deal of blue-white porcelain was produced in very high quality. Production was stimulated by local wealthy customers, but also by the growing export market to the Middle East and Europe. This fine vase may thus have been produced for either domestic or foreign consumption. The decor, depicting learned people who converse with each other in a beautiful mountain landscape, suited Chinese customers. By contrast, the stylized tulip pattern on the neck (which is derived from Turkish Iznik patterns) was well-liked by Western customers.
