This large-format vase with lid comes from Kutani in Ishikawa Prefecture. The three-coloured (gold, red, black), the entire vessel surface filled painting is called aka-e saikō and was from the late Edo to the middle Meiji period (in the middle of the 19th to early 20th century) popular. The drawing of the numerous hermites of high age (jurō), depicted on the abdomen, in a circle on the vessel shoulder and on the lid of the vase, represents a promising motif, called hyakurōshu, often found on Kutani ceramics, especially from the Nomi and Kanazawa regions. This vase is called jinkō tsubo. Although its shape originates from Jingdezhen ceramics of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), in this case Japanese coimari-kinrande ceramics of the late 17th and early 18th century from Hizen as a model. At that time, numerous koimari cover vases were exported overseas and were extremely popular in the European royal houses and under the skull for the decoration of their castles and palaces. Thus, this vase is a coimari-lid vase of Kutani, which was almost reinterpreted with an akae saibyō molding. Especially in the 1860s and 70s, numerous vases of this kind were exported to Europe. (MA)
