The Problem of the Joins: Egmont Overture

View through CrossRef
Abstract bEETHOVEN’ s overture and incidental music to Goethe’s play Egmont were written as a result of a commission, in the autumn of I 809, from the Viennese Court Theatre. The music was not completed until the following June, with the overture as usual apparently being finished last. The subject of the play concerns Egmont’s struggle against tyranny and foreign domination and his anticipation of ultimate victory—a subject particularly dear to Beethoven and also one of considerable topical interest in Vienna as a result of the French occupation of the city in I 809.
