Categories and Boundaries of Pansori Creation through Park Wol-jeong’s Pansori
View through CrossRef
Park Wol-jeong(1901-?) was born in Gangseo, South Pyongan Province, but her father was from Jeolla Province. Her husband, Lee Ki-se, was a theater artist and record planner. In this paper, I categorize the various layers of creativity that Park Wol-jeong applied to pansori, and through this, I examine the categories and boundaries of variation and creation that have been repeated in the history of pansori. The analysis shows that Park Wol-jeong expanded the theatricality of pansori by applying the Aniri commentary style, breaking up the passage, and musically focusing on conveying realism with more intuitive expressions. Through the example of Park Wol-jeong, the creative level of pansori music can be divided into four categories: variation within pansori language, acceptance of traditional music language, acceptance of language other than traditional music, and new creation.
