A Study on the Original Addresses of Jeong Jeong-ryeol and Jeong Weon-seop

View through CrossRef
Jeong Jeong-ryeol and Jeong Weon-seop were brothers who dominated the nation with as Pansori singer and Pansori drummer in the Japanese colonial era. However, official records about them have not yet been properly confirmed so far. Nevertheless, many new facts have been confirmed through on-site investigations. Jeong Jeong-ryeol’s birthplace was at odds with Heungbok-ri in Heungsa-dong, Gimje, Naechon-ri, Mangseong-myeon, and Iksan-si; but this survey did not confirm his birthplace. However, when the family register began being written in 1909, it was confirmed that both Jeong Jeong-ryeol and Jeong Weon-seop lived in Mangseong-myeon, Iksan-si. Thus, although it was not possible to confirm their birthplaces, their original address was confirmed. This investigation confirmed that Jeong Jeong-ryeol’s official name was Jeong Myeong-seop and Jeong Weon-seop’s official name was Jeong Jung-ryeol. They are siblings and have the same parents. Although the names of the clans differ, it is correct to view the Yeongsan Jeong clan as a mistake in the record. Differences in the degree to which the date of birth or age differs do not seem to be major problems in confirming Jeong Jeong-ryeol and Jeong Weon-seop. This investigation confirmed that Jeong moved his family register to 45-3 Oncheon-ri, Onyang-myeon, Asan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, 544 Bijeon-ri, Pyeongtaek-myeon, Jinwi-gun, and Gyeonggi-do. Jeong Weon-seop was confirmed to have moved his family register to Nangsan-myeon, Mangseong-myeon, Yongan-myeon, Nonsan-si, and Gujagok-myeon. Meanwhile, a photo of Jeong’s granddaughter in front of Jeong’s grave was found, and the investigation confirmed that Jeong’s granddaughter now lives in Seoul. Jeong’s grave was lost and its location could not be confirmed. Currently only one house site is in the main register of Jeong Jeong-ryeol and Jeong Weon-seop, divided into several lots, some of which are incorporated into roads. However, because the land boundaries have not changed, the location can be identified. There are few official records of Korean Pansori master singers. Pansori master singers and master drummers who were active in the Japanese colonial era often do not have official records. Their presence remains in the realm of testimony. We must now find clear records and bring them into the realm of history. It is hoped this investigation will serve as a starting point.
