Objective: To compare the outcomes of injection sclerotherapy using almond oil in 5% phenol, hypertonicsaline (15%) and dextrose water (50%) for management of paediatric rectal prolapsed.Material and Methods: In this randomized controlled study all patients with rectal prolapse who met theinclusion criteria were admitted following ethical permission No. 20095, dated November 28, 2019, REG/KEMU,clinical trial was registered with clinical trial by registration no NCT06353230. Lahore. The lottery approachwas used to randomly assign patients to groups A, B, or C. Patients in Group A received injectionsclerotherapy using 5% phenol in almond oil; groups B and C received injection sclerotherapy using 15%hypertonic saline and 50% dextrose water solution, respectively. Two to three milliliters of a sclerosing agentwere injected into the submucosa at three different locations around the circumference. Every patient wasmonitored throughout their hospital stay, released the same day, and monitored for recurrence of rectalprolapse, fecal incontinence, perianal abscess, and anal stenosis after the first week and three months. Results: Patients who received 5% phenol in almond oil (16.13%) during the 3-month follow-up had ahigher recurrence rate in our study. (p-value = 0.456). Patients treated with phenol in almond oil had aconsiderably increased rate of anal stenosis at the third month (9.68%). At the three-month follow-up, nopatient in any therapy group had perianal abscess or fecal incontinence. Conclusion: In terms of low recurrence rate, anal stenosis, fecal incontinence, and perianal abscess, ourstudy found that 50% dextrose water is the most effective treatment for pediatric rectal prolapse. Keywords: injection sclerotherapy, 5% phenol in almond oil, 15%hypertonic saline,50%dextrose water, rectal prolapsed. How to cite: Arif HM, Sharif M, Iftikhar MA, Bashir MK, Azam M, Sharif MS.
