View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Johann Georg Knapp. The German theologian is presented here as a chest image to the right. His gaze seems absent. He wears a short wig, as well as the garment of a clergyman with buffalo. The effigy is framed oval and contains an inscription and a small cartouche at the bottom with a psalmstelle: "Ps. XXV. 21. "
Johann Georg Knapp first studied law at the University of Altdorf before moving to Jena to study theology. In 1725 he moved again and went to Halle, where he worked as an informator at the pedagogium after his studies. After a short stay outside Halle, he took over the post of inspector of the Latina around 1733, and in 1739 he was already a professor at the theological faculty of Halle. In addition, he became director of the Franckeschen foundations and after the death of August Hermann Franckes (BS-III 697 and others) he replaced them as director of the Franckeschen foundations. His son, Georg Christian Knapp (BS-III 316 and BS-III 573), also became theology professor and director of the same foundation in Halle.
The leaf was made as a copper engraving by Georg Paul Nusbiegel (1713-1776), copper engraver from Nuremberg. Other copies of the paper are at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel and the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. The Händel-Haus Foundation has another portrait of Knapp: BS-III 718.
