Porträt Johann Gottlieb Heineccius (1681-1741)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Johann Gottlieb Heineccius. The German legal scientist is shown here as a chest image to the right. He turned his head to the left towards the observer. He wears a long, curly wig with a knot in a curl, plus a patterned jacket with silk shirt underneath. A cape wraps his left shoulder and part of his hull, a tip of which can already be seen on the right shoulder. The effigy is oval and rests on a Sims, where a shield with its name and profession is attached. Johann Gottlieb Heineccius studied theology in Leipzig. Together with his brother Johann Michael (BS-III 574), who received a job at the Ulrichskirche in Halle, he moved to Halle and first became a house-teacher of law students of a count, as he himself sought such a degree. In 1708 he became adjunct to the Faculty of Philosophy and five years later became professor of philosophy. After his doctorate, an extraordinary professorship followed in 1720 at the Faculty of Law, a year later he was appointed to the Ordinarius and was given the title of court council. After a professorship in Frankfurt (Oder), he returned to Halle in 1733 to succeed Christian Wolff (BS-III 218). The sheet is not signed because it is circumcised, but it was attributed to the Leipzig draftsman Martin Bernigeroth (1670-1733). It was published as a frontispiece in the publication by the Leipzig bookseller Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch (1688-1738), son of Johann Friedrich Gleditsch (1653-1716): “Deutsche Acta eruditorum oder Geschichte der Scholten” (Leipzig, 167. Theil. 1732). Other copies of the paper can be found in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, the Berlin State Library, the Austrian National Library in Vienna and the Duke August Library in Wolfenbüttel.
